The inspiration behind my brand... dopamine dressing!
Have you ever noticed how a certain outfit can instantly boost your mood and make you feel more confident? That's because what we wear has a direct impact on our emotions and overall well-being. This phenomenon is known as dopamine dressing and it's a fascinating concept that combines fashion and psychology.
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that plays a crucial role in our reward and pleasure centres. It's often referred to as the "feel-good" chemical because it's associated with feelings of happiness, motivation and satisfaction. When we engage in activities that stimulate dopamine release, such as eating delicious food or receiving compliments, we experience a sense of pleasure and reward.
So, how does dopamine dressing fit into all of this? Well, it turns out that what we wear can also trigger the release of dopamine in our brains. When we put on an outfit that makes us feel good, whether it's a vibrant dress, a tailored suit or a cosy sweater, our brain responds by releasing dopamine, which in turn enhances our mood and boosts our self-confidence.
But what makes an outfit dopamine-inducing? It's all about personal preference and individual style. Some people may feel their best in bold and colourful clothing, while others may prefer more minimalist and neutral tones. The key is to wear something that aligns with your authentic self and makes you feel comfortable and empowered.
Personally, I’ve always been drawn to “hero” pieces of clothing that “make” an outfit. A basic pair jeans and t-shirt, elevated by a single piece – a stand-out jacket or great pair of shoes or statement necklace. These kinds of items don’t only simplify dressing but also give the wearer an instant “feel good” vibe. This is because it gives you a dopamine rush!
I’d never thought too much behind the psychology behind it, just that I enjoyed wearing such items. I've always been drawn to colour and all things bright and “sparkly”. But it wasn’t until I was diagnosed with ADHD last year that I realised that I wasn’t just drawn to these items because they were pleasing on the eye, but because they were actually giving me a much needed hit of dopamine which I actually "needed" (as it’s believed that people with ADHD may have lower levels of dopamine and therefore seek it out more than neurotypical individuals).
When founding Etoiles et Bisous, this idea has been central to my thought process – to design jewellery that is colourful and fun – wanting the wearer to feel joy, uplifted and inspired. Each piece is hand-made combing natural stones, pearls and beads, to create unique styles that I hope you will treasure!
